Critics Consensus

Covering an era of tenuous peace with ferocious -- albeit abbreviated -- focus, House of the Dragon is an impressive prequel that exemplifies the court intrigue that distinguished its predecessor.

House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) A whole season in, I’m still struggling to remember which ones are Aegon, Aemond, Daemon or Everybody Loves Raemon. Jun 21, 2024 Full Review House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kaiya Shunyata RogerEbert.com While season two of “House of the Dragon” starts strong, it eventually becomes clear that this series is at war with itself. Jun 7, 2024 Full Review House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Kyle Chayka New Yorker Against the odds, HBO showrunners made more than reheated Game of Thrones leftovers. Dec 8, 2022 Full Review House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Joshua Polanski the post calvin Even visually, while more stylistically contained, the first season felt as impressive as the Battle of the Bastards or the Alan Taylor–directed episodes in the early seasons. Rated: 4/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net If this keeps up, House of the Dragon may become something even grander than Game of Thrones. A vast political epic about dynasties that, in crafting such believable fantasy, rivals the richness of Tolkien. Rated: 5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review House of the Dragon: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut It’s a fine series in its own right, delivering all the political machinations, gore, depravity, and royal plotting that the franchise is known for in spades. Yenny G One word. Boring. I had high hopes for this show after how interesting and exciting GOT was. It was super drawn out, too much dialogue, no truly interesting characters that we root for. We only got a little excitement the last couple of episodes. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Alexander M I haven't read the books but the sets, writing, actors, character building & overall cinematics are incredible. One of the best series in years. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review NASHVILLE I High production value with close attention to art direction. Having that been said, House of the Dragon does nothing new that we haven't seen for 11 years on Game of Thrones. It's the same over-the-top nudity and gore, with the worst people winning and the decent people losing. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review John S I honestly don't get the appeal of this show. People rave about it as if it's peak Game of Thrones. I've tried to watch it three times and it's just so *dull* it's like a high budget soap opera. Most scenes take place in one of three locations, the dialogue is meandering and the one big threat was taken care of offscreen after a three minute scene on a beach.I will admit that I've never made it to the end of the first series as every episode felt like a chore to watch, but what I saw was enough. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Pablo R Solid season. Character development and palace intrigues are as good as usual, but the story lacks a powerful nemesis like the nightwalkers, so there is not as much to keep me hooked. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Harry N It's safe to say I was cautious going into it after the final season of Game of Thrones by D&D. But I got hooked since the first episode and realise everything that George writes is pure gold. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
